From the Region Commissioners

Stepping Up While Our Commissioner Is Away

A message from Ray Read, Acting Region Commissioner

Hume Region Scouts  |  Commissioner's Bulletin  |  September 2026

With our Region Commissioner enjoying a well-deserved overseas holiday, I am pleased to share this update as Acting Region Commissioner. It has been a busy and rewarding period across the Region, with plenty to celebrate and much to look forward to.

Community Night

Trivia Night Brings the Region Together

Our Region Trivia Night on 22 August 2026 was a terrific evening of fun, friendly competition and discovery — whether we knew the answers, had forgotten them, or had no idea at all! A very big thank you goes to Anell Cummins and her team for organising such an enjoyable event. The laughter and networking made all the hard work worthwhile, while the funds raised provided a welcome boost for the Region's 80th Anniversary events.

Trivia Champions

Congratulations to the night's champions, "Knot Your Average Tutu"!

Volunteer Recognition

Celebrating Outstanding Service

In our last edition, we named the 42 recipients of Adult Recognition Awards. It was my great pleasure to take part in the presentation day on 23 August 2026, when most recipients received their awards. Hearing the citations read aloud highlighted the extraordinary contribution these Leaders have made to youth members throughout our Region.

State Volunteer Team

We were fortunate to have members of the Scouts NSW State Volunteer Team with us to assist with the presentations: Chief Commissioner Bel Howell; Deputy Chief Commissioner — Operations & Support Phil Crutchley; Deputy Chief Commissioner — Program, Youth & Adults in Scouting Gai Green; Assistant Chief Commissioner — Region Operations Kerry Griffin; and Deputy Assistant Chief Commissioner — Adventure Delivery Ahmad Mustafa. Ahmad was also recognised as an award recipient for his service as a Leader at 1st Wattle Grove.

Our thanks also go to the Hume Region Scout Fellowship for providing afternoon tea. As we celebrate this year's recipients, please consider who should be nominated for an Adult Recognition Award next year. Many deserving Leaders and supporters contribute quietly and consistently across our Region. When nominations open at the end of the year, prepare a nomination — or join with others to share your knowledge and put one together. By working collaboratively, we can help ensure that outstanding service receives the recognition it deserves.

Looking Ahead

Humeoree Is Taking Shape

Planning for Humeoree is well advanced and, by all accounts, it is shaping up to be an excellent event for our youth members. On behalf of John Selwood and myself, I extend sincere thanks to Sam Vandenberg and her organising committee for the tremendous work taking place behind the scenes to bring this event to life.

Thank You

It has been a privilege to step in as Acting Region Commissioner during a period with so much to celebrate. Thank you to every Leader, volunteer, youth member and supporter who contributes to the ongoing success of Scouting in Hume Region — I look forward to welcoming our Region Commissioner back soon.
